2016 Lessons

2016 was a rough year, to say the least. Personally I was faced with a lot of challenges and the year did not go according to plan at all. Not everything that happened was bad, but it was definitely difficult. My year was full of many memories and a lot of growth. Looking back on the year I wanted to pay attention to the positive things. Here are some of my 2016 lessons!

1. If you don’t learn to be content with what you have, you will never be completely happy.

For some reason we always want more. This year I have learned that I need to content with what I have while I am working towards more. If we aren’t content then we will never be happy with the things we have. This has been a great reminder to me this year!

2. True friends will be there for you NO MATTER WHAT.

I had a really tough year and went through a lot of things. My true friends stayed by my side, supporting me the entire time. This is so incredibly important!

3. The only thing standing between you and your dreams — is yourself.

This was a huge one for me this year! I have made a lot of decisions that will affect my future in a huge way, especially with school and my major. Reminding myself this as I made my choices was really helpful.

4. Stop trying to plan out your life.

Every single time I finally think I have my next 5 years or so planned out, something happens to completely turn that plan in a 180. It happened too many times this year and it made me realize that I can’t keep making those plans.

5. Stop trying to make everyone else happy, proud, etc.

Everyone is going to have their own opinions about what your choices are, let them. You need to remember that your happiness is what matters in the end and if they truly care and love you, they will support you. Not everyone has the same definition of success so they may not understand your decisions at first. Just keep doing what is going to help you reach your goals.

6. Never stop working hard.

No matter how many times you fail or how many times things don’t go the way you wanted, never give up! Life can be hard and sometimes it isn’t enjoyable. Push pass the difficult times, it will be worth it!

7. Take time for yourself, often.

This one is SO IMPORTANT! Taking time for yourself helps you regenerate and get the right attitude again. This can look different for each person, but I personally love to have quiet time with a good book (often times in a bubble bath). It helps my mind escape and I always feel better after!

8. Eating well and 3 times a day makes a HUGE difference.

This one may be obvious to most. I learned this particularly towards the end of 2016. I had a really rough last four months and my health was slipping as a priority. Then came finals week, moving, the holidays and things continued to get worse. I then decided that I was sick of feeling like crap all the time. I started to focus more on what I was putting in my body and I cannot believe the difference it made!

9. Everything will be okay — one way or another.

Even if it doesn’t work the way you had hoped or within the time frame you had hoped for, it will all be okay. I had to remind myself this one a lot, but it is so true.

10. Pets are the best.

I already knew this one, but 2016 reinforced my thinking big time. I got 2 new cats this year and they are my babies. Just being around them makes me feel so much more calm and happy. Animals are so amazing!

11. Take time to spend on your hobbies, no matter how busy you are.

You deserve rewards for your hard work! Once I went to college I never took anytime for the things I love to do. This year I started to take time weekly to set aside for my hobbies and I love it!

12. Stop explaining yourself to everyone.

This one is still difficult for me, but I try. It is your life to live and you may not want the same things that others want. You are not on a timeline and you don’t need to follow the same path that everyone else takes. If you change your mind, you do NOT need to explain to anyone why you did so. Live your life how you want to live it!

13. You are good enough.

I still have to remind myself this daily. Whatever your dream is, no matter how big or small, go for it! If you have the passion and determination, you really can do anything. Get ready to work hard and do it because you are good enough!

14. Family is everything.

I don’t know what I would have done without my family this year. They helped me out and supported me in so many different situations. I can’t be thankful enough for my amazing family <3

15. Positive thinking can completely change how your day goes.

This seriously works. You need to pay more attention to the things that go good rather than the things that go bad. When something bad happens, step back and figure out how you can fix it and continue on. If you can’t fix it then let it go because it is out of your control anyways. Stay Positive!

16. Don’t let anyone tell you that your feelings are wrong or that they don’t matter.

No one can really understand the way you are feeling or why you are feeling a certain way. You don’t ever need to explain to anyone why you feel the way you do. Also no one can ever tell you that you can’t feel a certain way. I came to understand this a lot this year. Don’t ever feel like your feelings aren’t valid because they are.
