What to Give up for Lent: 15 Ideas

It’s the time of year when I start thinking about what I am going to give up for Lent 2017. I always want it to be something selfless and that will help me glorify God. You don’t have to only do these things during Lent 2017 season, but its a great start!

  • Social Media: I gave up social media last year for lent and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. No snapchat, facebook, twitter, instagram, or pinterest. It was difficult in the beginning, but by the end I felt more free and learned so much.
  • Candy and Sweets: This is a very common one to give up. With anything like this I just say, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. Don’t do it to “be healthier” or to “diet,” do it so you have more time to spend with God.
  • Sugary Drinks: Same goes for this as for candy and sweets. Make sure your intentions are good.
  • Meat: I’ve personally never given up meat, but it is very common. It’s a way to fast during the lent season.
  • Time spent getting ready: Make yourself spend less time getting ready everyday and spend the extra time with God. Praying, reading the bible, praising him, or quiet time.
  • Elevators: This one may sound silly, but I love it. If you use elevators on a daily business for work or apartment access, give them up for the lent season. While you walk the stairs, be intentional and spend that time praying or listening to music or sermons.
  • Throw away/Donate 40 Things: Explains itself and is a wonderful thing for so many reasons!
  • No eating after dinner: Same as candy, sweets, and sugary drinks. If you give this one up, make sure it isn’t just because you want to lose weight.
  • Turn off electronics @ 8pm: Spend the time you normally would on electronics, with God instead. Highly recommend the TV show, The Bible!
  • Bad Language/Inappropriate Jokes: I do this one for every lent and I try to continue it even outside of lent season.
  • Fast food and/or frozen meals: One more time, don’t do this just to lose weight.
  • Anything getting in the way with your relationship with God!!

  • Daily Journaling
  • Reading Scripture/Bible Study
  • Prayer

  • Bad Language/Inappropriate Jokes
  • Fast Food, Candy, Sweets, and Soda: Every time I have a craving for one of them, I will pray instead.
