The Importance of Daily Self-Reflection

So far during this year, I have been focusing on bettering myself in little ways every single day. Creating good habits, being conscious of what I put in my body, destroying bad habits, chasing my dreams, focusing on my future, and doing what makes me the happiest. One of the main things I have learned during this lifestyle change is how important it is to have daily self-reflection! Without it, goals are near impossible to achieve, bad habits are harder to break, and you’re unable to improve upon your mistakes.

After you make the decision to go after your dreams, the next most important thing you can do is start practicing daily self-reflection. Don’t worry, I’ll tell you exactly why you need to practice daily self-reflection. I’ll also give you some ideas on how to get started.

I talked a little about daily self-reflection in a previous post on how to improve your mood on a bad day, but I decided it was such an important topic, it needed its own post.

If you begin daily self-reflection, I promise you, you will get positive results out of it and it will change your life for the better. So let’s get into it!

It’s so easy to set New Year Resolutions and monthly/daily goals, however for whatever reason most of us are unable to stick to our goals. We never end up achieving them because we don’t follow through. We write down the goals and then forget to look at them ever again.

Self-Reflection fixes this problem!

All you have to do is write down your goals (I recommend having yearly, monthly, and weekly goals along with daily objectives) and put them somewhere that you can see them every day. I keep mine in my life binder that I use every single day and I write down my daily objectives in my planner.

Now that you have a designated spot for your goals, you need a designated time to review them each day. I’ve found that either the beginning or end of the day (or both beginning and end) are the ideal times.

During this designated time, you should reflect on your daily objectives and see what went good and what went wrong. Where can you improve? What is your biggest weakness of the day?

This time can also be used to get your focus ready for the next day. What do you need to accomplish to get closer to your overall goal? What can you do to make sure you stay productive and on task?

Reviewing your goals daily will increase the probability of you achieving your goals! You just have to stick to it, no matter what.


This has been a HUGE goal of mine this year and it’s so difficult! They are called habits for a reason. Without implementing daily self-reflection, it would literally be impossible to change them.

One of the best things I’ve ever decided to do is start a ‘daily habit tracker’. It’s just a sheet with a list of daily habits I’d like to start/stop. Each day I check off each one that I either did or didn’t do.

This allows me to look back and see my progress and it’s also super motivating because I LOVE checking off things I have completed. I keep my daily habit checklist in my life binder as well, right next to my goals. HIGHLY recommend this!


This one is a HUGE reason to start practicing daily self-reflection. We only have one life to live (YOLO) so why wouldn’t we strive to have the most fulfilling life possible?!? It’s a no brainer!

Of course, it sounds much easier than it is, but it is SO WORTH the hard work! Plus this can apply to so many things in your life. If you’re a rather lazy person and want to become more motivated, self-reflection can help. You need to find things that get you motivated. The best way to do so is by reflecting daily on “what went well, what didn’t go well, what can you change”. Then make the changes and learn from your mistakes.

Self-Reflection is all about being aware of your strengths and weaknesses and learning from them.


“Retrain your brain” sounds really weird, I know… but I didn’t know how else to title it. Retraining your brain is actively teaching yourself to focus on the positives in life, even the little ones.

This honestly works so well. Throughout the day or at the end of the day think about what you’re grateful for. When something goes a different way than you wanted, try your best to find a positive result, even if it is super small. Life is too short to let things ruin your day. Dwell on it for a little bit if you need to then move on. I’m not saying to suppress your emotions, just keep moving forward and never give up on finding a solution.

Daily journaling can be beneficial for so many reasons and I highly recommend it to everyone. It’s a place to write down all of your thoughts, failures, and dreams. Plus I really enjoy looking back in my journal to see how I’ve changed as a person or to remember certain memories. There are so many benefits from keeping a journal!

Writing about your day and thoughts is a great way to take time and think about every little aspect of your life. Things you want to change, things you love, ideas you have, dreams and goals, and everything in between. Seeing it all on paper helps put more reality into it.

For a little motivation, get yourself a cute journal!


I talked about this already, but it’s seriously the best thing you can do if you’re struggling to achieve your goals. It’s so easy to set a goal, even write it down, and then never look at it again. As I mentioned before, you need to write down your goals and put them in a place where you will see them

Take action to do something each day that gets you closer to your goals. You need an action plan and you need to review your goals every day.


If you don’t do anything else then do this. Start or End your day with time set aside for you to reflect and plan. Look back on yesterday and pick out the main positives and negatives of the day. What would you like to change, how can you improve, and what do you want to continue doing?

Now plan the next day. What are your main objectives? Which goals do you want to focus on? What can you do to better yourself and your future?

Take the time to really reflect on yesterday and plan out the next day. This will change your mindset to be more positive and motivated!


Start Small.

If you’re anything like me then you have a huge list of things in your life that you’d like to improve. Well not to break your heart, but perfection is impossible. You will NOT be able to completely change your life in one day or even one month and you will never ever achieve perfection. It will take a lot of time and dedication to make any changes. If you try to make too many huge changes too quickly, you will get overwhelmed and end up being right back where you started.

I had to learn this the hard way. PLEASE listen to this tip even if you don’t listen to anything else!

The best way I’ve found to start small is by taking everything day by day. If you make even slight progress, it’s still progress and is so motivating as long as you focus on the positives. Also keeping track of your progress is extremely inspiring to keep going. When you’re feeling defeated, look back on your progress and think about how far you’ve come rather than how far you have left to go!
